 | Washington Bats Silenced by Hickey Friday, July 10th, 1908: Jack Hickey of the Chicago White Sox was on top of his game today. He tantalized the Washington Senators with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 1-0 shutout.
In the postgame comments, the Washington skipper said, "He had the changeup working. You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Chicago hurler had 10 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 6 hits in his complete-game effort.
Hickey told reporters after the game, "To be successful in this league, you have to keep the ball down. If you don't, they'll make you pay."
Thus far this season Hickey has posted a 4-10 record, started 17 games, struck out 85 batters in 144.2 innings and compiled a 2.12 ERA. | |
