Essick Fires Shutout in Cleveland Victory
Saturday, August 10th, 1912: "He was too darn good for us today," grumbled the Boston manager after his club suffered a 3-0 shutout at the hands of Bill Essick of the Cleveland Naps. He held the Boston Red Sox scoreless in a 5-hit whitewash.

Essick was in a zone of his own most of the game and finished with 4 strikeouts and 5 walks in a strong outing.

In a postgame quote his own skipper added, "He pitched his butt off, had good velocity, good movement and had those guys off balance. Bill did a whale of a pitching job."

Looking at his season stats, Essick has won 12 and lost 9, collecting 92 strikeouts and 108 walks in 207 innings with a 2.78 ERA.
Lee Magee Out for 4 Weeks
Saturday, August 10th, 1912: Cleveland fans will be disappointed to learn that Lee Magee suffered an oblique strain while running the bases in today's game. After the doctor informed the Cleveland Naps manager that Magee was expected to miss 4 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the second baseman could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

So far this year Magee has hit .312 with 2 home runs, 49 RBIs and 66 runs scored.
Tannehill Mystifies New York
Friday, August 9th, 1912: Jesse Tannehill had an impressive outing today. He hurled the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-0 shutout victory over the New York Giants, yielding 6 hits with 4 strikeouts and no walks.

"He threw strikes and he was always around the plate," the New York skipper said. "The ball was doing everything he wanted it to do. We hit some balls hard, but they were all right at the fielders."

This season-to-date, Tannehill has fashioned a 15-7 mark and 2.71 ERA in 202.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .267 against him and he has logged 68 strikeouts.
