Washington Senators win World Series

A look at the 1905 World Series:

Game Six:

Due to the day off between Game 5 and Game 6, the Giants are sending SP Christy Mathewson back to the mound to pitch as the series shifts back to Washington for the conclusion.  The Senators are sending Long Tom Hughes to the mound to try and close this series out for the second time for the club.  Hughes has yet to lose a game in the playoffs going 2-0 3.00.  Today, Long Tom had all that was needed.  He went the complete game giving up 3 runs, while the Big Six clearly looked tired lasting only 6.2 IP and giving up 8 runs.  He gave the Giants everything he had, but he couldn't do it all alone.  26,075 fans came to the park for the largest crowd of the year.

In the end, the Washington Senators are the World Series Champions and they are a very deserving team!  They have good players, they play the right way, and they have a great owner!

Game Five:

The Giants find their back up against the wall. They are sending Christy Mathewson (3-1 1.93 in playoffs) despite giving up 4 runs 2 days ago.  The Senators feel secure in sending McMackin (1-2 4.13) back to the mound to try and slam the door (and life!) on the Giants.  If Washington can win this game, they will be named World Series champs.  Keep in mind, the Giants are 2-2 at home during the playoffs, while the Senators are 4-1 at home.  Is this going to end the series or can we get at least one more classic game to watch at home?

The Big Six proved why he is such a relied upon arm in New York.  Despite being proven a mere mortal in Game 3, he took the ball in Game 5 and was named player of the game for his complete game 3 ER performance.  The Giants walked to the batters box in the first couple of innings and were all business.  2b George Davis did his job leading off for the Giants going 2 for 4 scoring a run and knocking in 2.  Crab Jessie Burkett continued to prove he was the free agent pick up of the year getting another hit and knocking in another run. For the Senators, Sam McMacklin didn't look very good pitching 8 innings (complete game) giving up 6 runs on 10 hits (most in the first and second inning).  The offense got 7 hits, but they have 4 errors in their last two games.  Yes, they won the previous game, but this sort of defense will catch up with you and it did today.

Game Four:

Same result, different way.  Both teams ended with 11 hits, but the Senators were able to squeeze one more run across the plate in the top of the 9th and that was the difference between winning and losing. 18,950 came to the ball park to day to witness the pitching clinic put on by Dale Gear and Addie Joss.  Both guys pitched a complete game, but Gear only gave up 2 runs where Joss gave up 3.  A couple of games ago it looked like the Highlanders were going to push their way to victory; oh how times change.  The good news is both Evers and Kling both got a hit (.206, .111) and the Senators are crusing.  The fans in New York are starting to hound DH Rogers Bresnahan for his .167 batting average in the playoffs this year and word around the league is it is starting to get into his head.

Game Three:

The general thought was the Highlanders were going to roll over the Senators now that the series was heading back to New York, but nobody would have guessed that the Senators hitting would come this alive. Christy Mathewson has been unbeatable throughout the playoffs, but today he didn't have his good stuff.  He was pulled in the 6th inning and had to be embarrassed by the outcome.  Some have wondered whether he was tipping his pitches.  Henley, on the other hand, pitched exactly how the Senators needed in this offensive bashing. Doc "Brownie" Gessler was named player of the game for his 2 fro 4 performance with 4 RBI.  Even without Kling or Evers hitting their weight, the Senators are up on the Highlanders 2-1.

Game Two:

Game Two gave us New York's Addie Joss against Washington's Tom Long Ball Hughes.  This didn't leave much hope for the Senators but they didn't care today.  They were not intimidated by Joss and it showed.  Joss went the complete game giving up 3 runs on 7 hits, but Long Ball Hughes was just a tad better.  3 runs is too much for the Giants to continue to give up.  The Senators manufactured runs today while the Giants seem to wait for the middle of the order all day. Nig Clarke was moved up in the lineup and responded by going 0 for 4.  On the other hand, the Senators won despite the fact that Johnny Evers is batting .148 for the playoffs and didn't get on base all day.  The bottom of the order with Mathison, Coughlin and Danny Green is what scored all the runs for the Senators.  The series is tied heading back to New York.

Game One:

The NY Giants were very loose before the game: chatting, laughing, and having a good time.  The Senators came to the park all business and what ended up being a little tight.  When the Big Six took the mound he was hurling those curveballs inside and out.  He pitched a complete game scattering 9 hits and giving up three runs.  That could have been enough for the Senators except that McMackin did not have his good stuff.  He went 6 innings giving up 7 runs until he was relieved by Reisling.  The Senators looked tired and beat before the game ended and frustrated at the end.  26,337 fans showed up for this game in Washington as many fans came down from New York.  The Giants started the 1st inning with 4 runs and never looked back.  George Davis did enough getting on base to keep things interesting for the Giants.  Nig Clarke had the biggest day going 2 for 4 with 2 runs knocked in.

Preview:

The World Series is the most listened to ball game of the year.  Fans from across the country tune in for the broadcast or go downtown to hear the results of each pitch and crack of the bat. The World Series gives us a battle between two of the biggest cities in the country, two of the most powerful cities, and two of the very best teams.  The New York Giants vs the Washington Senators should prove to be one of the battles that people will talk about for years. The Giants will push Christy Mathewson and Addie Joss to the mound as much as needed, but if the series goes deep they will not be afraid to send Ralph Caldwell to the mound.  Washington will go with unproven Weldon Henley, Dale Gear and Sam McMackin which won't strike fear by name alone, but their performance this year will shake many of a batter.  Both of these teams can hit, but the Senators have a huge advantage especially if Johnny Evers can find his stroke and get on base.

Both teams are of high moral caliaber and play like true professionals.  The Giants have an edge in pitching, with the Senators having the edge in hitting. Even so, I think the Senators have pitching to win and the Giants might not have the hitting to do the same.

Prediction: Senators in 6.

Breaking News:

+Iron Man on way to Brooklyn

The Superbas have been sending mail, telegram, and message via the new telegraph and have yet to get a deal done.  That was until tonight.  The Superbas found the first place Pirates selling and they were buying.  SP Iron Man Joe McGinnity will be the newest addition to the Superbas rotation and SP Joe Harris and 3b Jap Barbeau will join the Pirates AAA affailate.  Iron Man is 8-8 3.08 this year and 109-74 2.91 for his career.  Iron Man should be a good veteran addition for the Superbas.  3b Jap is a long term prospect and may or many not develop.  Harris is the one that is hard to part with.  Harris is 1-2 2.48 this year with a much lower ERA than Iron Man, but he has yet to be tested in the playoffs like Iron Man (won 2 championships with the Highlanders/Orioles). Harris is a huge up and comer after being promoted from AAA this year.  Fans have been clamoring for him for a while and many newspaper man have wondered why the Superbas didn't give him a chance in the rotation earlier.  Either way, the deal is done and it may not be the last deal before the deadline.

+Tigers Lash Out: The Tigers free fall has finally taken them from 1st place in the AL West. Management isn't making any hasty decisions however, as we feel the team has overachieved all season long. The offense has been a major disappointment as Fred Clarke and other free agents have under-performed all year. Even still, the future looks bright in Motown, we'll see how the rest of the season goes...
